Winscombe Under-13s end Wellington’s 20-match unbeaten run.

WINSCOMBE Under-13s faced a difficult task against Wellington, who boosted an unbeaten run of 20 games.

A no-nonsense team talk before the game from coach Steve Hartshorne seemed to inspire the lads and they all played some brilliant rugby to inflict defeat on Wellington.

Winscombe started well with good runs by Alfie Light, Thomas Amer and Joe Hartshorne, but Wellington hit back, only stopped by Tom White and Rory Hancock, who deserve a special mention for some brilliant tackles.

Winscombe came closest to scoring in the first half when Hartshorne chipped forward for Amer to collect the loose ball, but he was bundled into touch by an excellent cover tackle.

Winscombe took the lead from a penalty just inside Wellington’s half. Taken quickly, Hartshorne chipped the defence and the ball was fed back to scrum-half George Marsh to score in the corner.

Gabe Bell and Alfie Light kept the home side out with some good tackles. Light also combined well with Louis Yallop to drive into the home side’s half. This move set up Amer to touch down under the posts, making the conversion easy for Hartshorne.

Tails up, Winscombe’s forwards started to dominate, firstly George Harrison powered through and then Josh Hunt was tackled just short of the line as Winscombe held on to win 12-0.
