BURNHAM'S John Simmons competed in the European championships at the Palalottomatica Arena in Rome, where he beat the current Italian champion Franco Geordi to claim the gold medal in a time of seven minutes 40 seconds. He has now qualified for the world championships which take place in Boston, Mass, on February 22. Success there would give him the British, European and world championships in the same racing year.Jackie Hicks (50-59 Hwt), John Simmons (70+ Lwt) and the evergreen Mavis Surridge (70+ Lwt) were the pick of the 26-strong British contingent picking up championship titles and gold medals. The rest of the team added a further four silver and three bronze medals to the fantastic haul.
