A group of family and friends came together to raise awareness for Motor Neurone Disease and have so far raised over £7,000 after completing the London Winter Challenge recently.

The team walked together to support Carol Hooper wife of Rob, who is a local referee in Weston, and Marcus Stewart.

Stewart recently launched a charity football match between a South West Legends side and an All-Star XI on Saturday May 13, which will be held at the Memorial Stadium, home of Bristol Rovers, to raise funds for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation.

Organiser Phil Hucker said the fundraiser had been a success and hailed each and every member who took part in the 25 kilometre walk.

"The Somerset Striders, from Cheddar, had a very successful weekend in London walking the Winter Challenge half-marathon in aid of Motor Neurone disease," he said.

"Some 16 people walked the route from The Oval cricket ground along the Thames returning to the Oval some four and a half hours later."

A magnificent £7,300 has been raised so far and Hucker went on to say how much every donation has been appreciated and will go a long way in to finding a cure for this terrible disease.

Carol, who walked over the finishing line, said she was overwhelmed by the support shown to this great cause and wishes to thank everyone for their help so far.
