WITH the forecast for gale force winds and rain for Saturday things didn't look too hopeful for the eighth staging of the BOOM BOOM Cup, played in memory of Keith Porter.

As it turned out the golfers won that battle with the worst of the weather arriving after play was completed and over 80 golfers competed in the popular event played using Keith's favourite Scramble format.

It was a couple of familiar names who ended up getting their names on the Trophy once again. Dave Mann and Paul Bacon have become something of specialists in this competition as they recorded their third win together when they teamed up with Gareth and Emma Davies.

The quartet scored a superb nett 50 to win by two and received the Trophy at the post round Presentation from Keith's father Mike.

Runners up on a score of 52 were the team consisting of Barry Brindley, Barry Fellows, Seniors Captain Ian Rogers and Head Greenkeeper Max Smith. A countback was required to decide the 3rd and 4th place finishers as two teams handed in cards of 53.

On the back nine it was Dave Bradley, John Cullinan, Nigel Ellis and Phil Barry securing third over Bob Pelzer, Scott Miles, Tony McCann and Barry Roe.

Two scores of nett 66 were the best of the day on Sunday in the August Monthly Medal. Division One was claimed with one of them courtesy of Club Champion Dan Broom whilst Kevin Davies secured Division Three with the other one.

Broom held a one stroke advantage over runner up George Havercroft in the top flight with Leighton Jenkins in third with a nett 70. Davies enjoyed a similar margin of victory with Les Byrne's 67 being his nearest challenge in Division Three and, again mirroring the top Division, third place went to a nett 70 from Adam Thompson.

In Division Two it was Connor Thompson who ended top of the pile on 67, one clear of Dan West in second and Dave Mann placed 3rd on 70.

Back on the opening day of August Mark Elvins was the top dog in the Seniors Monthly Stableford. He scored 40 points on a blustery Brean day to win by two points from a pair of players who returned scores of 38. After the computer had completed the back nine score countback it was Mike Allen who placed second with Brian Read taking third spot.
