A total of 38 ladies teams from Somerset came together for the Finals of the Fear Cup and Fear Plate at Ashcombe Park Bowling Club recently.
The final of Fear Plate was contested between 12 ladies from Yatton and Victoria. Yatton made an incredible start to the game, by the midway point they were 20 shots ahead and looking to widening the gap.
Victoria Ladies showed true grit and dug deep in the second half of the game to make it a nail-biting ending with Yatton finally winning 53 shots to 48 to win the Cup.
In the early afternoon sunshine, once the initial celebrations were over, the second game of the day was played between Portishead RBL and St Andrews with a great crowd of enthusiastic supporters in attendance.
With just a little rain to dampen the spirits in the early stages the Poppies were able to dominate play from the sixth end onwards showing much determination and some incredible shots!
Although St Andrews fought back, they eventually succumbed, and the Poppies were the worthy winners 58 shots to 31 to claim the Fear Cup.
Somerset Bowls Association’s Carolle Skeate and Championship/Competition Secretary Charmian Pearce both complimented Ashcombe for the fine condition of the rinks which allowed such high quality play.
