Captain Paddy Holyday said it is “crucial” for Uphill Castle CC to secure promotion back to the Somerset Premier ahead of their final game of their Division One season this Saturday.

Uphill travel to Castle Cary in their top of the table clash knowing victory would secure an instant return following relegation last season.

The Castle currently top the league with 474 points from their 17 games, five ahead of Saturday’s challengers and 23 more than third placed Wells & Horrington, who host Wedmore.

And with two teams confirmed to go up Holyday said they believe in themselves to go and get it done.

“It’s a massive weekend for the club and that all starts on Saturday,” he said.

“It’s should be a great game and hopefully we’ll get the job done.

“At the start of the season we set out the plan to go straight back up into the Premier and that is crucial for the club.

“We are confident in our ability and know that the final outcome is in our own hands. We’ll be focused on getting the job done.”

Holyday said he was “very pleased” with his side’s win against West Monkton, following their previous two “under par performances”displays” last Saturday.

Uphill dug deep to beat North Newton by one wicket after their lost to Wedmore by eight wickets.

And last weekend Uphill made it successive wins with a 10-wicket triumph to move them one step closer to promotion back at the first attempt.

“(I am) very happy,” Holyday added.

“We needed to bounce back after a couple of under par performance and we did.

“A very commanding performance and it has put us in a strong position heading into the final weekend. We did well with bat and ball and will be full of confidence for next week.”

Holyday hailed the display of three players after their impressive win in their final home game of the decision at The Castle.

He signalled out Chare Smith (7-31-9) with the ball whilst hailing Jermaine Jones (70 not out) and Finn Churchward (30 not out) with the bat.

“The stand out bowler was Chare Smith picking up seven wickets,” Holyday said.

“He bowled very well ripped through the West Monkton top order. In reply, Jermaine and Finn led us to victory in a commanding way, really setting the tone for next week.”
