Uphill Castle CC captain Paddy Holyday says he has "every confidence" in his team to claim the Somerset Cricket Foundation Intermediate Cup.

Uphill head to the Cooper Associates County Ground, the home of Somerset County Cricket Club, for the first time in their 135-year history this Sunday.

The Castle will face Castle Cary CC at 4pm.

“It will be a massive day for the whole club” said captain Paddy Holyday. “Hopefully we can put on a show for the travelling supporters and reward all of our amazing volunteers for their hard work over the season”.

“It could end up being a perfect end to a very good season. It would mean a lot to the squad were we to get our hands on the trophy and would really show our intent and the direction the club his heading.”

The journey began back in late May when Uphill faced Old Bristolians Westbury, of the Bristol & District Cricket League, in the first round. Castle were bowled out for 161, with Jermaine Jones (53) and George Cox (41) top scoring with the bat.

In reply, Old Bristolians Westbury could only reach 120-6 from their allotted 20 overs. Kieran Ward being the pick of the bowlers, picking up figures of 14-2 off his four overs.

In Round Two, Uphill faced Lympsham & Belverdere at The Castle in a great game of local cricket. Again batting first, Uphill posted 192-8. The runs were shared between Jones (23), Cox (38), Tom Llewellyn (45) and Ash Allen (30). Lympsham & Belvedere put up a good fight, but fell 32 runs short, with Finn Churchward the pick of the bowlers with figures of 17-3 off three overs.

Uphill were granted a walkover in Round Three as Burnham-on-Sea were unable to raise a side and then faced Winscombe in a highly anticipated quarter-final fixture.

After winning the toss, captain Paddy Holyday decided to stick with what was working and opted to bat. Uphill looked in trouble at 117-7, but valuable runs at the end from Smith (22) and Ward (28) meant Uphill finished up on 162-7 and the momentum had changed.

Winsombe got off to a good start but lost regular wickets through the middle overs and could only reach 106-9 from their 20 overs. Himesha Halneththige bowled brilliantly (22-5-4) and was support well by Allen (18-3-4).

In the semi-final Uphill faced Cranmore at Midsomer Norton CC in what was probably their most commanding victory of the competition.

Batting first, Cranmore finished on 80-9 from their 20 overs in what was a brilliant display of T20 bowling and fielding. The opening pair of Smith (5-3-4) and Cox (11-1-4) were brilliant upfront and were backed up by Allen (7-1-4) and Ward (19-3-3) through the middle overs to seal a place in the final.

“We’ve beaten three sides in divisions higher than us on our way to the final and think this shows how good our current group of boys are," Holyday added.

"Of course we mustn’t be complacent and Castle Cary will be as desperate as we are to win but I have every confidence in my team that we will get the job done come Sunday.”
