It was a weekend of celebration at St Andrews, with the men beating holders Congresbury to win the Somerset Wedmore Plate for the second time and the women finished top of their division in the County League.

Saints men, winners of the Plate in 2017, went into Sunday’s final at Taunton as underdogs.

Three Saints’ rinks were ahead at halfway, with the other trailing by 10 shots. However, Darrell Johnston’s quartet came roaring back to win seven of the last nine ends and earn a draw. With the other three rinks staying in front, Saints were home by 16 shots.

Captain Robin Potter received the trophy from county men’s president Richard Soper.

St Andrews’ talented women clinched their county league division with a 12-0 whitewash of home team Isle of Wedmore. Also, they still have a chance of winning the DRT League following a five-shot home win over West Backwell.

St Andrews Seagulls’ fine run in the Fantastic Fives Indoor Championship was ended, narrowly, by Dorchester Dynamos at the quarter-final stage.

However, they could take some consolation from the 12-4 pairs victory by Sue Sinclair and Barrie Forse against a duo including England player Martin Puckett. Phil Villis did well to lose by just one against Puckett in the singles.

All Saints’ indoor players are invited to a meet-and-greet evening at the clubhouse tonight (Thursday).
