Congresbury CC captain Justin Yau’s said his team produced a “magnificent” performance to beat Bedminster Seconds to win the WEPL Bristol & North Somerset title last Saturday.

Yau’s side secured their 11th victory of the season in the 47th over at Bedminster to win the match by five wickets.

The triumph saw Congresbury finish the campaign with 264 points, piping Brislington to top spot by one point and a place in WEPL Prem 2 Bristol & Somerset for the first time in their history.

“I am absolutely delighted for the players and the club,” Yau said.

“I feel over the course of the season, we probably deserved it and we had the most wins in the division.

“We knew we were going to be there or thereabouts having finished third, third and second in the previous three seasons.

“I thought the performance was magnificent. There was pressure throughout the day as we knew what was at stake and at halfway and the title was probably in the balance.

“Fair play to Brislington who did everything they possibly could from their position to pile the pressure on us with a 22-point win but we managed to save our best team batting performance for last weekend.

“We knew we couldn’t lose more than eight wickets to secure the title so I am so pleased everyone contributed to a fantastic win.”

Yau joined Congresbury in 2018, one year after they won Bristol & District Senior Division championship title, from Torquay.

And Yau says this titles means a great deal to him and signalled out a few important people for their contribution along the way.

“Personally, it means a lot to me as this is a very special club with great people and a fantastic community,” he added.

“I’ve been welcomed with open arms since I’ve arrived and it’s been a privilege to have led this journey in the last five years.

“A special mention has to go to Sam Evans who was integral in getting Joe (Thompson) and I to join the project and he led the boys so well to win the Bristol & District division before in 2017.

“Chairman Geoff Wilcock and President Les Owen have been extremely supportive throughout my tenure and Club legend Mike Fisher has continued to be an excellent sounding board with all matters at Congresbury.

“All the boys who have been involved over the last few years deserve this league win and it’s exceptionally exciting to have a little village like Congresbury in WEPL 2 next season competing against some of the best clubs in the South West.
