Uphill Castle CC claimed the Somerset Cup with an 89-run victory against Castle Cary at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

Uphill lost the toss and were made to bat first with Jermaine Jones and Finn Churchward producing a masterclass of T20 batting.

At the end of the power play Uphill had already reached 66-0, with the ball being sent to all parts of the county ground. The openers continued the onslaught, amassing a partnership of 148 before Jones (79 from 33) fell in the 14th over, after a truly remarkable innings.

Castle Cary did have a small resurgence, picking up a a further two wickets in the same over. George Cox (0) and Chare Smith (1) fell cheaply.

Tom Llewellyn (25 from 13) provided some additional quick runs in the back overs, but the start of the show was Churchward in his final game for the club.

The opener carried his bat for an astonishing 99 not out from 65 balls, to help Uphill finish on 216-5 from their 20 overs.

In reply, Castle Cary started well and were 40 without loss after the first four overs.

It took a magic piece of fielding from Halneththige to break the opening partnership. With the batsmen attempting a second run, Himesha Halneththige threw the ball from the boundary perfectly off the stumps for captain Paddy Holyday to whip the bails off and the dangerous Matt Holland (18) had too depart.

Two further run outs (Churchward and Halneththige) after poor running and excellent fielding from Uphill left Castle Cary in real trouble at 47-4. With Ward (4-0-22-1) also picking up a wicket.

Castle Cary never looked close to chasing the formidable total set out by Uphill. Halneththige (4-0-17-2) again impressed with the ball and did not allow any new batsmen to settle.

The final five overs was an opportunity for the players and supporters to take in the moment of playing on the County Ground.

This excitement was only increased by a brilliant over from Huke (2-0-4-3) who picked up an amazing hat-trick that sent the crown into frenzy.

The game was finished after a brilliant catch from Jones off the bowling of Sam Matthews (0.3-0-2-1), leaving Castle Cary all out for 127 in the 19th over.

“It was a truly brilliant day for everybody involved with the club,” Holyday said.

“The boys on the field had the opportunity to take in the final couple of overs as the game was finished as a contest. It was amazing to pick up the trophy and lift it infront of all our members.”
