Winscombe edged past Victoria Saxons to win the over-55s Knockout Cup after an exciting final recently.

Victoria came into the game as league champions after securing promotion to the Somerset Premier One and won four of the six games.

Captain Owen, who led by example for Victoria, aided by Puddy T and Holland winning 23-10. Heal, Bromet, and Wheatley came away with a 20-12 win, Burgess, Carpenter and Gibbs won 18-14 and John Newman enhanced his reputation as the most successful Saxon skip for the summer winning 18-16 with Coumis and Milliner assisting.

This pattern proceeded to the very final shot of the day but wins for Winscombe's Tom Ellis and Mike Adams helped the Combe triumph by the slenderest margin possible, 95-94, and provide heartbreak for the Saxons.

However the highlight came in the form of Victoria’s mixed triple entrants in the Somerset County competition. The team of Fiona Waters, Pete Sloman and Steve Davies took on a strong Purnell team in the semi-finals and produced an excellent 23-9 win.

This meant the Westonians had to play a very strong Ilminster and came out an astonishing 23-9 win with the trio all playing a huge part in this wonderful accomplishment.
