Lauren Filer said she has "tried to take in every moment" of what has been a "whirlwind" 2023.

The cricketer from Weston-super-Mare CC was called into the England squad for the Ashes, where she made her international debut and took four wickets, before she was named Player of the Series against Sri Lanka in the three-match ODI series.

And Filer said she couldn’t have expected what she has gone through year and it will be one she will fondly remember.

“It’s hard to put into words,” she told Somerset County CC's website.

"I’ve used the word ‘whirlwind’ to describe it because it was completely unexpected. It was so exciting and I just tried to take in every moment because I didn’t think it would happen this year.

“It was nice to come in and take a few wickets. When you’re playing against the best players in the world it’s nice to know that you can compete alongside them. Hopefully, I showed that I can do that.

“The plan was to run in as hard as I could and bowl as fast as I could and try to use my bounce. That’s what I like to do. I like to be an impact bowler. I might go for a few runs but hopefully I’ll take a few wickets along the way.

"It’s been great to have the backing of England, Western Storm and London Spirit this year to play that role. It’s been really good to have been able to have that consistency across the summer.”

Filer said she was surprised to be crowned player of the series against Sri Lanka.

She took three wickets for just 27 runs, including two in successive deliveries to help England win the first test by seven wickets at Chester-le-Street.

After rain disrupted England's opportunity to win the second test at The County Ground in Northampton, where Filer took two wickets for 25 runs, the 22-year-old seamer once again played a starring role in third test in Leicester.

Filer took claimed another three-wicket haul for just 30 runs to help England thump Sri Lanka by 161-runs to secure the series 2-0.

“Obviously, it was a really nice thing to happen" she added.

"I wasn’t expecting it at all. When I got told, I was a bit nervous about doing the interview. Everyone was saying ‘well done’ and cheering me on, so it was lovely to have that backing from the team. It was a really good way to end the summer.”
