BOTH the Seniors and Club Winter League competitions got underway last week at Brean Golf Club with two events being contested in each event.

The Seniors Winter League got underway first last Tuesday morning with a Betterball Stableford being the first competition format on the schedule.

With path works taking place, meaning the 5th hole was closed, the event ran over 17 holes. Taking the early lead in the event which will run through until the end of next February was Tony McCann and Steve Barker.

The duo carded 40 points to win by one from Dave Cogger and Mats Mattsson. Also scoring 39 points but losing out on a back nine countback for second was the pairing of Mark Banczyk-Gee and Tony Oliver who were placed third.

The trio of Chris Fairchild, Ken Rouse and Mark Elvins were five clear of their nearest challengers in round two of the Seniors Winter League on Thursday.

With two scores to count on each hole they totalled 84 stableford points between to take victory and the top points on offer. Ending the day in second on 79 was Tony Oliver, Kevin Davies and Mike Allen with John Govey, Mel Brown and Alan Eboe taking third one point further back.

The overall scoreboard could not have been more different to the day's 'runaway win' result.

After the opening two events the lead is shared by no less that 4 golfers on 11 winter league points apiece. The leading quartet comprises Tony McCann, Steve Barker, Mark Elvins and Chris Fairchild and they will be the people everyone will be chasing when the event resumes in the second week of  November.
