Winscombe RFC came away with a handsome 40-13 win against Thornbury in their latest Regional 2 Tribute Severn encounter last Saturday.
Winscombe started brightly and were soon pressing inside their visitors 22 but were undone when Thornbury counter-attacked, right wing Kieran Sparrow neatly chipping the defence and gathering the ball to score in the corner.
From the re-start Winscombe’s pressure paid off with a penalty setting up an efficient driving maul with flanker Tom Broom driving over for a try which was converted by centre Sam Dearsley.
Infringements inside Winscombe's 22 allowed Thornbury to regain the lead with two well taken penalty kicks before Dearsley broke through for a converted try just before the break to go into half-time 14-13 ahead.
A match that appeared finely balanced at half time took on a different complexion in the second period with Winscombe dominating territory with fine kicking from Dearsley and half backs Lewis Podpadec and Ollie Walrond.
Capitalising on this and playing a game that married forward power with fine running rugby, the home team went on to score a further four unanswered tries, a brace each for prop Simon Thomson and left wing Will Powell.
The bonus point win comfortably moves Winscombe 1sts towards mid table with a trip to Gordano to come this weekend.
