Woodspring Indoor Bowls Club marked their long-awaited return Somerset County League with defeat on shot difference by Purnell, from Radstock, recently.

The format saw two rinks in Weston and two at Purnell as Woodspring made their return after a 20-year absence

The match began evenly and after 10 ends Woodspring’s dream start looked a possibility, who held a slender two-shot lead. 

However, Purnell refused to lie down and after 15 ends they were now in the lead by the same two-shot margin. 

With tension high and the match in the balance Purnell finished best to record victory.

Despite drawing the rinks at two all it meant Woodspring were just beaten after a superb performance. 

The standout showing came from the Mike Cooper rink who won 25-12 away from home, the rink consisted of Coumis, George and Sloman. 

At home it was the Gary Cunningham rink which shone producing an excellent hard fought 20-18 victory, aiding Gary was Smith R, Brown and West. 

Chairman Gerald Holcombe was full of praise and said “I am very proud of all the team today, our expectations are low, we know we are the underdogs in every game, but we are united and determined to improve.”
