Weston AFC manager Scott Bartlett said he “couldn’t be more disappointed” after his side were beaten 3-2 against Weymouth in the National League South on Boxing Day.

The Seagulls took the lead through Dayle Grubb’s penalty before goals from Harry Parsons and Terras captain Tom Bearwish turned the game around for the visitors. Jason Pope levelled the scores in stoppage time at the end of the first half to ensure both sides went into half-time all level.

However, Brandon Goodship restored Weymouth’s lead in the 71st minute to inflict a third straight defeat on Weston.

And Bartlett said he was not happy with the display and how side applied themselves.

“(It was a) poor performance (and) poor application,” he said.

“(We were) really poor when we didn't have the ball, so, that tells you that we thought we could just turn up and play some pretty football and get a result against the one of the most hard-working teams in the division and I couldn’t be more disappointed.”

When asked what he thought went wrong?

“I don't think we applied ourselves properly for the first time really,” Bartlett added.

“Maybe once or twice it happens something has definitely crept in. We need to be more stubborn when we haven't got the ball, we need a better shape.

“All the things that we've really good at in the last few weeks. Today it was like a basketball game. We're really open and I think we underestimated Weymouth, but we thought our strengths would outweigh theirs without having to do the bits that they're really good at.

“They worked tirelessly, they closed, they press, they ask questions of you just by their sheer endeavour.

“By half-time we could have scored five goals, and we should have and that's another area we need to improve.

“Just like the other day (when) we scored at Hampton, just before half-time we had wave after wave of attack, and we couldn't put the ball into the back of the net. We ended up losing the game 2-1.

“And then today we could have been out of sight at half-time, although I wasn't pleased with the performance. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that if we had taken our chances, we'd have won the game, and everything would have been rosy.

“I was really disappointed at half-time. It was the application, which I can't label at this group of players very often, but I think it's fair to say we didn't run as hard as we have previously.”
