St Andrews men maintained their 100 per cent record in the Somerset County Bowls League with a crushing victory over a depleted Bristol team on Saturday, writes James Keay.
After a close opening few ends, Saints ran away with the game. The two away rinks, skipped by father and son Lee and Sam Stocker, were outstanding, winning by 30 and 24 shots respectively.
The home rinks found it tougher, but a final-end five clinched victory for Phil Villis’s rink, in which Geoff Sims made his league debut. Brian Reeves made it a clean sweep of all rinks for Saints.
Saints found North Wilts much tougher opposition on Sunday in the Wessex League, finishing up on only one rink to earn just two points. Sam Stocker’s 14-shot victory was wiped out when the other home rink went down by the same margin. The away rinks were always up against it, but restricted the eventual overall margin of defeat to only 14 shots.
A hotshot eight helped Saints’ Dave Fairhurst and Lee Stocker beat Gary Jay and Dave Brightman (Clevedon) 23-11 in the fourth round of the national men’s pairs.
