St Andrews men made a first-round exit from the Somerset double-rink championship when they lost on an extra end to Clarrie Dunbar.
A dominant performance by Sam Stocker’s home rink, who won by 17 shots, appeared to have paved the way for victory, but Si Angove’s away four struggled throughout and they lost by the same margin, making the scores level after the scheduled 18 ends.
The extra end was played at Clarrie Dunbar and, with the jack in the ditch, Angove drew what looked like the winning shot. However, home skip Duncan McGovern played an even better wood to snatch it for Clarrie.
Saints’ Barrie Forse reached the area semi-final of the national over-60 singles with a hard-fought 21-16 victory over Bristol’s John Marshall.
Local umpire Mike Davies, a member of Banwell Bowls Club, has been honoured by the World Bowls Tour.
