St Andrews women continued the defence of their Somerset County double-rink championship with a crushing quarter-final victory against Watchet, writes Jim Keay.

The margin of victory, 50 shots, could have been greater, but Watchet conceded with several ends to play. Rebecca McMillan’s home rink and Jean Whittaker’s away team scored sevens as they both won by 25 shots.

A stiffer test awaits in the semi-final, against either Clevedon or Ilminster.

Saints men beat Clevedon by 12 shots in the Wessex League to maintain their outside chance of qualifying for the end-of-season play-offs.

Although both home rinks struggled, Saints’ away teams were dominant and the overall lead was 26 shots at one time. By the time the home rinks had finished, there were only four shots in it, but the away teams finished strongly to seal 14 points.

Judy Forse, Sue Sinclair and Jean Whittaker, of St Andrews, reached the area final of the national over-50 triples by beating a strong North Wilts team at Bristol.
