Woodspring Indoor Bowls Club faced a daunting task on Saturday when they took on Clarrie Dunbar who is undoubtedly one of the strongest teams in the Somerset County League.

Added to this was the fact that the Westonians were missing five key players. Despite this, the match began evenly with little to choose between the teams after ten ends, with Woodspring just holding a slender lead.

At Home, John Smart was bowling well and keeping his rinks hopes of victory alive. While on the other rink Ray Stone was bowling many crucial woods for his rink.

However whereas in the past the Away rinks have performed superbly they were both finding life very difficult this time round.

As the game progressed Clarrie edged further ahead and eventually ran out 84-69 winners.

There was some good news for The Woody boys from the home showings with one rink losing by just two shots and the other securing a crucial victory.

The winning rink was led by Julian Brown and supported by Roger Smith, Gerald Holcombe and the excellent Ray Stone.

Captain Tony Westren was again pleased with the courage of his team in their first season and looked forward to next week’s encounter in the double rink against Bridgwater.
