St Andrews are one step away from retaining the Somerset County League championship following a 34-shot victory against Ilminster in the semi-final on Sunday.

The Saints made a horrible start to the game after being 24 shots down after five of the 21 ends, with the two strong away rinks a total of 18 shots behind.

However, Lee and Sam Stocker’s away teams soon adjusted to the fast Ilminster surface and won eventually by 21 shots.

At home, Darrell Johnston’s rink found themselves 0-5 down after three ends but did not drop another shot until the 18th end, finishing 33-9 up with some great play by the front end of Denis Holborow and Richard Whittaker.

Saints will play Taunton Deane in the final on April 6th, who beat Isle of Wedmore in the other semi-final and will have home advantage.

Husband and wife Charlie and Clare Andrews have a busy weekend in front of them as St Andrews stage their club finals as they play against each other in the open triples.

Meanwhile Charlie takes on Lee Stocker in the men’s championship and Clare partners Sue Churchill in the women’s pairs.
