Weston-super-Mare’s Victoria Bowls Club welcomed Weston Bath on Saturday for the traditional annual pre-season friendly between the two club sides.

As it always has been in the past the match was played in a great spirit, with lots of camaraderie along with some healthy competition on the green.

From the beginning though it was clear that the home side were adapting to the outdoor conditions far better than their visitors from Bath.

Victoria already had a comfortable 56-23 margin at the midpoint, and despite gallant efforts from Weston Bath, the Westonians ran out triumphant by 117-60.

Not only did they win by a 57-point margin, but they also managed to win every rink of the match.

Top scorers for the day were the Cooper rink, team members Kimitri, Puddy K and Smart out classed their opponents to win 33-8.

Next up was the Gazzard rink in which Victoria won 24-14 and featured players Cleeves, Kelly and Milliner.

The Colin Heal rink with Carmine, Barlow and Bradley notched up their win with a nine-shot margin ahead of Weston Bath.

Veteran Wheatley then spearheaded his team of Carpenter, Sharp and Puddy T to a win, and was promptly followed by the quad of Fairhurst, Hollier, Coumis and Burgess to complete a clean sweep for Victoria and get the summer season off to a good start.

Captain Dave Carpenter can be pleased with his team’s first performance and will be optimistic for the coming season.
