St Andrews boosted their challenge for the Men’s Somerset County League title with their biggest win of the season against Purnell.
Facing the same opponents for the second time in a week – the previous game was in the Wessex League – Saints topped a century of shots to win on all four rinks by 55.
The home rink of Tim Wyatt, Ryan Poulding, Nick Sell, and Lee Stocker started with a six, scored another later, and also added four fives to be 43-3 up with five ends left before winning by 34.
Brian Reeves’s home team trailed until the 16th end, then a run of nine shots in four ends saw them win by two.
Away, Saints were in excellent form, with Geoff Poole, Steve Browning, Rob Saddler, and Alan Biss notching 27 shots, 17 more than their opponents.
Phil Villis had a much harder game, finishing two ahead.
St Andrews women suffered a surprise defeat by Nailsea in the county double-rink league.
They looked set for victory even when Becky McMillan’s winning home rink dropped a five on the penultimate end, but the away four conceded ten in the last two ends as Nailsea won by six.
Alan Biss, Darrell Johnston, and Lee Stocker qualified for the area final of the national men’s over-50 triples when a late five brought them a two-shot home win against a Clevedon trio.
Saints’ short mat team could not get to grips with a difficult surface at Kewstoke and lost heavily in the Woodspring League.
