St Johns Reserves faced their toughest test of the season so far against Clevedon United.

Clevedon Utd 2

St Johns Res 3

SAINTS went into this Division 1 game knowing this would be their toughest challenge to date.

They got off to the worst possible start, conceding after only two minutes. After some great wing play by Troy Hayes, Rob Winter saw his header hit the bar. Winter was soon celebrating the equaliser, after some good work from Dan Hartley.

Saints were forced into an early change when Troy Hayes limped off, giving Tino a chance to impress. Winter doubled his tally with an unstoppable to give Saints the lead.

After the break, Clevedon put Saints under pressure and soon equalised. The midfield of Hayes, Hodrian, Hartley, Tino and Charalambous worked hard, but it was only a matter of time before Saints took the lead.

Winter raced clear to complete his hat-trick, but as the game wore on Saints tired and Luke Vinnercombe and Winter picked up injuries. The were put under more pressure, but the defence of Vincent, Mike Winter, Vinnercombe and Mitchell held out to give Saints a vital three points.

The Mike Whittiker men of the match were Jason Mitchell and Rob Winter.

Portishead Town A 0

Kewstoke Lions 0

AFTER five straight Division 2 wins, Kewstoke dropped their first points of the season against a hard-working Portishead side.

The game lacked entertainment with only a couple of shots on target. Leon Brueford came close to breaking the deadlock when his effort came back off the post. Portishead replied by striking the crossbar, but both sides failed to find the cutting edge when it mattered. The two Bryans up front for Kewstoke worked hard, but much of their running was involving tracking opposition players.

Kewstoke’s back four soaked up some late pressure as the game ended with a deserved share of the points.

DS Securities man of the match was shared between Popperwell and Fieldhouse.

Portishead Town Colts 0

Worle Rangers 4

RANGERS bounced back in style from last week’s defeat with a solid performance against Portishead Town Colts.

Troy Hannam and Tom Williams defended from the front well and with the midfield of Adam Brown, Jamie Ingersent, Dean Bray and Liam Willment working hard, Portishead were limited to the long ball.

With a well-organised back four of Shane Quick, Matt Wilson, Jake Hannam and Dave Knight in control, any balls into the box were managed by keeper Nathan Royce.

By half-time, Rangers were two up, both goals involving Troy Hannam, the first a penalty by Quick after Hannam was brought down and the second scored by Hannam after a corner from Ingersent.

After the break, goals were hard to come by as Portishead gave little away. Troy Hannam grabbed a second after a long ball from Knight. John Wilde gave fresh legs up front, while Jo Dale dazzled in his cameo role and Marc Trewern delivered a great corner which skipper Wilson headed home to make it 4-0.

The whole squad played their part, but the Curry Garden man of the match award went to Jamie Ingersent.

Wrington Redhill Res 0

Weston Players 1

PLAYERS edged this entertaining Division 5 affair against a strong Wrington Redhill side.

Wrington started the brighter and it was a busy opening 20 minutes for Players’ back three of Riddle, Ashmore and Jones, Dan Owen in the Players goal twice being tested. As the midfield trio of Page, Earey and Ballantine began to get a grip, chances were created at the Wrington end.

Ballantine was denied twice by great saves by the Wrington custodian and the new look frontline of Bush and Marshall saw efforts turned away by the impressive stopper.

After the break, Players began to dominate proceedings, limiting Wrington to a free kick that Owen turned over the bar. Chances were squandered at the other end before Tom Bush settled the contest after good work by Page and DeVanney.

Some stalwart defending preserved the lead as Players held on to record victory. The man of the match accolade went to Ballantine.
