A GOOD turnout of over 60 anglers competed in Weston Sea Angling Association’s annual RNLI Open competition on Weston beach.

Twenty-eight of them weighed in 34 codling, 10 flounders, a thornback ray and a rockling.

Highbridge angler, Steve Tanner, son of WSMSAA chairman Mike, had four cod for 7lb 6oz to earn top prize of £200. Derek Bristow also had four cod for 6lb 7oz to take home £100 and England international Rod Marshall landed three cod for 5lb 3oz, winning £50.

Best placed junior was Scott Nicholls, who came ninth overall with two cod and a flounder for 3lb 10oz.

The optional cash pools for best round fish and flat fish went to Morgan Wilson (3lb 11oz cod) and Kevin Daley (1lb 4.5 oz flounder). Each received £50.

Pete Holder and crew from the Weston Lifeboat were at The Royal Hotel to collect a cheque for £700, adding to many thousands of pounds donated in previous years. Weston’s deputy Mayor, Jocelyn Holder, kindly accepted an invitation to hand over the many cash and other prizes.

The chairman thanked the main sponsor, PRV Engineering of Ponty-pool, BSFSA and other generous donors and also entrants and helpers for contributing to an excellent outcome.

WSMSAA’s next event is on December 19 is the Christmas Open, with many prizes of Christmas fayre including luxury hampers worth £150, £100 and £50.

Fishing is from 2.45-6.15pm on Weston beach. Sign on from 12.45pm at the clubhouse. Cost for this Penn points match is £10 adults and £5 for OAPs and juniors.
