Ashcombe Park have had a fantastically busy last few weeks to the 2021 season which has kept bowlers and supporters fully occupied – so they will be looking forward to the coming winter break!

A full fixture list has seen the club hosting the finals of The Fear Cup, Benevolent Triples, semi-final between Devon and Cornwall, Walker Cup match between Devon and Worcestershire, Under -8’s match against Devon, several visiting tourist teams as well as a full programme of ladies’ and men’s league matches.

Ashcombe Crusaders had a very great season and won the Over-60 League Division Two title but Ashcombe Knights were unable to clinch the second spot.

Both the ladies’ and men’s team enjoyed very successful runs in the Fear Cup and Turnbull Cup, progressing further than they have for several years.

The ladies’ reached the Fear Cup Final but came up against a very strong Portishead ‘Poppies’ RBL and finished runners-up, while the men reached the semi-finals of the Turnbull Cup, but lost by just six shot to the eventual premier league winners Bloomfield.

The finale of the season’s in-house competitions saw the finals played over two days, with the weather exceptionally good, allowing players and spectators to enjoy some spectacular and entertaining bowling.

Winners (ladies/men): Championship: Jane Sansam/Andy Tucker; two-wood: Pauline Wynne/Dennis Carr; Cribb/Novices: Sally Hopkins/Gary Cunningham; Handicap: Pauline Wynne/Alan Corbett; Phyll Hammon/Pairs: Pat Mouland/Graham Wilcox, Martyn West; Vi Drew/Triples: Pauline Wynne/Charlie Day, Ben Benstead, John Taylor; Doris Payne/Veterans: Carol Smith/Graham Wilcox; Mixed Pairs: Pat & John Mouland; Presidents: Paul Barnes.

Ashcombe Park's closing day will take place on Saturday (September 25) with a final ‘Umbrella’ match followed by a meal and speeches.

As the greens take their winter break the action will then move indoors with a full programme of short mat bowling, snooker, darts etc, plus a full list of social events to keep members happy until the 2022 season starts next April.

After a very successful 2021 season the management would like to thank all returning members for their loyal support over the last 18 months and welcome the 43 new players who have joined throughout the year.

The club also wishes all local bowling clubs the very best during the winter break and looks forward to meeting them on the greens next year.
