Kewstoke Lions defeat St Johns Sports Bar to capture the Atwell Shield.

Kewstoke Lions 4

St Johns Sports Bar 1

THESE two rivals played for the fifth time this season, this time in the final of the Atwell Shield.

Sports Bar started the better side, but Kewstoke took the lead against the run of play when Callum Thompson headed over the keeper.

Kewstoke stunned Sports Bar with a second goal when an Alex Chatterley drive was flicked in by Ryan Fieldhouse. The hard-working Sports Bar continued to battle away and after a 15 minute onslaught, they scored with a far post header.

The goal seemed to kick start Kewstoke and they took the game by the scruff of the neck. Adam Brueford and Laurie Roberts were strong in the middle and the back line of Aaron Bray, Steve Channing, Leon Brueford and Chris Hay were solid. Up front Ryan Fieldhouse and Ben Popperwell worked tirelessly to create space.

Jack Brewer came off the bench and with his first touch ran in behind and lobbed the keeper to extend Kewstoke’s lead. Ryan Fieldhouse’s performance was topped off as he chased a lost cause to round the keeper and finish off the match.

Sports Bar deserve credit for never say die attitude, but Kewstoke deserved victory for the way they battled.

Man of the match went to Ryan Fieldhouse and Adam Brueford.

Nailsea Town Res 5

Kewstoke Lions 1

KEWSTOKE were bought crashing back to earth two days after their cup final victory with one of there worst Division 1 performances of the season.

Thinking the game was already won, they failed to put any passes together and let the opposition walk all over them, finding themselves 4-0 down at half-time.

The second half wasn’t much better and only poor Nailsea finishing prevented the score line looking like a cricket match. Ben Popperwell did pull a goal back, but the game was over long before.

Selkirk United 1

Weston St Johns Sports Bar 4

SPORTS Bar kept alive their promotion hopes with an impressive win at Selkirk, despite fielding a side decimated by injury and unavailability.

Veteran Wayne Nielson continued his recent run of good form with the Bar’s opening goal. Top scorer Luke Page added the second and the hard-working Kieran Marsden added the third before the goal of the game from man of the match Robert Tyson, who scored with a stunning volley from just inside the halfway line.

Ben Sealey made a welcome return to action after a lengthy absence and put in an impressive final 20 minutes.
