AVENUE Tennis Club held its annual Christmas lunch which was well attended with over 75 guests sitting down.

The meal was prepared by club members Lynn O’Dell, Julie Cameron, Poo Jenkins and Jane Sanders. Head coach Vinny Duddy said the food was great and thanks went to all the ladies and to Heather Duddy, Jess Griffiths and Alex Stead, who helped decorate the event.

Coming up over the Christmas period will be the junior disco and party (17th), chairman’s mince pies (19th), Boxing Day social tennis tournament and the New Year’s Eve family disco. Details can be obtained from the club’s website www.avenuetennis.com or by ringing 01278 782758.

Vinny Duddy would like to thank BW Controls Ltd of Bridgwater for supporting the Avenue’s mini red ball academy.

The academy was started in September to give the players a more focused and intensive training programme. The players receive one individual and two group squad sessions per week and are expected to participate in LTA competitions throughout the county.

If you think that this is an opportunity that your child would relish, please speak to Vinny or Craig at the club.

The improvement in some of the players we selected has been outstanding, with both Megan Rundle and Harry Burrow winning tournaments.

The club is looking for local businessmen to help support tennis in the community following the decision of the LTA and King Alfred’s to withdraw financial support due to government cuts. Please contact Vinny at the tennis club for details on 01278 782758.
