THIS week saw the Uphill Badminton Club's men and juniors in action. Unfortunately the C team match against Chew Valley had to be cancelled due to the weather. The men's internal handicapped doubles tournament was a great success this year with 20 men playing. The draw took place to provide ten pairs. These pairs were then handicapped by a committee and split into two boxes of five. The top two pairs from each box then went forward to the semi-finals, the winners contested the final. All the box games were hotly contested and produced some excellent badminton. Box 1, which eventually proved to hold both finalist pairs, was extremely competitive with John Hunt and Tom Higgins getting 80 points and Mark Edwards and Grant Kelly and Simon Biddle and Jonathan Kittos both getting 79 points. Mark and Grant went through to the semis on games won. In Box 2, Paul Edwards and Robin Curry won all their games getting 84 points, and Matt Cole and John Davies with 79 points also went through to the semis. In the first semi-final Mark and Grant had a tough game against Paul and Robin but eventually won 21-19. The second semi was won by John and Tom who beat Matt and John 21-14. All four semi-finalists played well to overcome their various opponents. The final between Mark and Grant and John and Tom was close and produced some excellent rallies but at the important stage of 18-all, John and Tom kept their composure and showing slightly better control managed to win 21-19. It was great to see juniors, Tom, Grant, Robin and Billy Fear taking part in the club competitions and doing so well, with three of them reaching the semi-finals and two the final. Thanks to chairman Eddie Prest's excellent organisation, the evening was enjoyable and a great success. Tom Higgins and Grant Kelly have had a great week, reaching the final of the club's men's doubles competition, and coming out on top of Uphill Junior Club's monthly singles tournament for the top group. This group is split into four different ability boxes and all four boxes produced some close and excellent badminton. Eighteen players took part and this month's winners and runners-up were: Box 1: Emily Look (42 points); Kaylee Davey (35). Box 2: Sean Booth (63); Scott Morgan (58). Box 3: Billy Fear (60); Martin Brearley (50). Box 4: Grant Kelly (54); Tom Higgins (53).
