Banwell & Churchill picked up maximum points to move 29 clear at the top of the league.

BANWELL & Churchill made the short journey to local rivals Cheddar in their latest league game.

After a thunderstorm, the game was reduced to 35 overs a side. Brett Diver won the toss and inserted the home team and opening bowlers Brooks and Bush bowled tight lines to keep the score down.

The opening batsmen managed to get the score to 40-0 in the 13th over, with Brooks (6-2-14-0) and Bush (6-2-20-0) unable to take a wicket.

Gale (3-0-19-1) and Foukes came on and Gale got a wicket in his first over, well caught at square leg by Bush. Foukes continued the good work and picked up wickets regularly in his spell, ending with figures of 6-0-26-3, with two good catches from Diver and Bush.

With the score on 78-5, Biggs and Diver came on to bowl and were soon both in the wickets as they took the five remaining wickets between them. Biggs (7.4-2-12-2) and Diver (5-0-29-3) finished off the Cheddar innings, leaving them 123 all out.

The opening pair of Lloyd and Jones opened the batting, but Jones was soon out for a duck. Bebber was promoted up the order and moved the score on the 25 before Lloyd (8) was caught by the keeper.

This brought Carter to the wicket and made his intentions clear from the start. Bebber was well caught for 24 and he was replaced by Biggs. Both scored freely with Carter bringing up his fourth 50 of the season.

With only a few to win, Biggs was run out for 13, but Carter (54 not out) and Gale saw Banwell home in the 26th over to pick up another 35 points. They not sit 29 points clear with a game in hand.

THE 2nd XI recorded an emphatic nine-wicket win over visitors Huntspill and District in their latest league match.

They bowled their opponents out for 117 and then scored the necessary runs for the loss of just one wicket. Dave Eckett had a good game taking 4-19 in 12 overs and scored 52 not out.

Mike Legg was out for 33 and Rick Hutchinson finished on 19 not out. Other wicket-takers were Neil Duncan with 1-20 in 12 overs and Juggy Pearson with 2-13 in seven overs.

The 35 points gained sees the seconds continue their push for promotion.
