Banwell & Churchill gained maximum points in their comprehensive victory over East Huntspill.

BANWELL & Churchill continued their fine start to the season with an easy eight wicket victory away at East Huntspill.

After Brad Diver lost the toss, East Huntspill decided to bat first. Andy Brooks (2-24) opened the bowling for Banwell and made an early breakthrough by bowling Kidner for a duck, followed by another wicket to reduced Huntspill to 40-2.

Jermaine Jones replaced Brooks and with Mark Biggs at the other end, ripped through the Huntsphill line-up. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals with both Biggs (4-25) and Jones (4-19) dismissed Huntspill for 103.

In reply, Biggs and Gareth Lloyd got the Banwell innings off to a sluggish start with Biggs losing his wicket early for a duck and when tea was taken after 10 overs, Banwell were 49-2 after Lloyd was out lbw for seven.

After tea, Carter hit the ball to all parts and reached his 50 in double quick time. K Gale at the other end showed good support for Carter with a productive 19 not out as Banwell finished on 104-2 off 18 overs.

Carter finished 61 not out with three glorious fours to finish proceedings off. Banwell took the maximum 35 points and moved up to second in the table.

On Saturday, Banwell entertain Bishops Lydeard 2nds (2pm) at home as they carry on their promotion push.

THE 2nd XI enjoyed a comprehensive win against visitors Leigh-on-Mendip.

Their opponents decided to bat first, but were soon regretting their decision as they were bundled out for only 73 in 35 overs.

Captain Neil Duncan was the pick of the bowlers taking 6-25 in 10 overs. Other wicket takers were Kevin Burgess (1-2), Mike Pye (2-10) and John Biggs (1-10).

Banwell and Churchill’s opening batsmen Rick Hutchinson (30) and Mike Legg (28) knocked off the runs in 17 overs to help their team to a 10-wicket win and collect the maximum 35 league points.
