C & C Banwell remain unbeaten in the Archdale Cup with one match remaining.

IN the Weston and District Table Tennis League Archdale Cup, the two groups are nearly completed.

Group A is headed by an unbeaten C & C Banwell A, still with one match to play. Their latest match was a 4-0 win over a depleted Winsc Rebels, both teams having just two players. Max Jeremiah (9) won his two against Mike Baker (5) and Dave Hunt (1). Hannah Cope (14), with her two wins lost a game to each.

Wayfarers’ Rich Parker and Phil Yates (both 9) had only one Totterdown Flamingo opponent, Phil Orchard (15), who managed to win both matches, losing one game against Yates. The result was a 2-2 draw.

In Group B, Totterdown C hold on to their lead in the group after a close 5-4 victory against Vets C. Both teams with similar handicaps fought right to the end game.

Vets started by pulling away 4-2 before Totterdown put the brakes on, Garry Chell (11) beating Len Noble (12), Mark Price (10) overcame Garry Evry (10) and finally Bert Hiscock (10) took the winning point by beating Tony Chedgy (10).

There were mixed fortunes for Vets A in their two latest matches. They lost against C & C Vipers 8-1. Successful Vipers’ Bill Atkinson (-1) and Mike Withyman (0) with three, Max Jeremiah (9) with two, lost to Roger Crump (2).

Although Vets A beat Winsc Warriors 9-0, they were made to work hard to get their points with good rallies in all the games. Warriors’ Dave Parker just missed out on 19 and 20 against Roger Crump (2) and made Ann Sandford (5) play a third game.

Kiem Mu (4) won all three for Vipers. Andy Greed (-1) beat Renegades’ Trevor Jones (5) and Dave Williams (15) in three games. Jade Cope (8) played well to beat the experienced Jones 20 and 19. Vipers go through 6-3.

There was a better result for Renegades against Winsc Warriors, with Trevor Jones taking all three, just losing a game to Warriors’ Pete Joiner (13). Rich Parker (9) beat both Joiner and Anne Baker (11) also in three.

Paul Hayward’s -1 was a step too far to recover when he lost in three to both Baker and John Cook (10). Winsc Renegades won 6-3.

In the league, it was unfortunate Banwell A could only rustle up two players against Winsc Warriors in Division 2.

It was a fun match played with a great attitude, with both Beth Atkinson and Hannah Cope playing their socks off, showing their improvement and getting the hang of Warriors’ devious play. Beth won two, but lost in five to Warriors’ Dave Parker. Hannah won a game each from Cath Smith and Peter Joiner. Smith and Joiner won a close five-leg doubles, Warriors winning 25-12.

Beth Atkinson shone again in the Banwell A match versus Banwell B winning all three singles. She conceded two games to Jack Brent and one to Katy Groom. Brent and Alex Chandler both won two each for the B team. It was a fitting 20 each score line in a hard-fought match.

Totterdown Flamingos with just two players were up against Vets C. Phil Orchard beat Len Noble in four, but lost to Garry Evry in four and Tony Chedgy in five. Linda Cronin also took a game from Chedgy and Noble. Vets C won 28-8.

In Divison 1, Wins Rebels had a good 9-1 win over Totterdown Demons, not easily won with most going all the way to five games. Rob Hansen and Dave Hunt conceded games to Demons’ Graham Cheeseman and Jason King. Demons took their point with a win by Cheeseman over Mike Baker.
