ATHLETE Bethan Wakefield has enjoyed considerable success recently, setting new personal best times.Bethan attends Backwell School and is a member of Newport Harriers Athletics Club.She took part in the SW England indoor track and field championships at NIAC, UWIC Cardiff and came away with three gold medals, in long jump with a new personal best of 4.94; in 60m with another new personal best of 8.14; and in 200m in 27.40. Then she took part in the Welsh indoor championships again at UWIC, Cardiff, and won gold in both the 60m and long jump. She is the SW England Under-15 girls' champion in 60m, long jump and 200m and the Welsh Under-15 girls' champion in 60m and long jump.She took part in the English indoor championships at the NIA in Birmingham and progressed through the 60m heats and semi-finals to win a place in the final, finishing seventh and achieving a new personal best along the way of 8.04. As well as now holding both the regional title and the Welsh national title, with the indoor season drawing to a close, these results mean Bethan is ranked ninth in the UK and first in South West and in Wales for 60m; 10th in UK; first in SW and also Wales for long jump.She can see how much the hard winter training sessions have paid off and gives her something to build upon for the coming track and field season.
