ST ANDREWS is to host two inter-area finals on Sunday.

ST ANDREWS is to host two inter-area finals on Sunday.

The ladies’ singles gets underway at 10am and matches Stephanie Branfield, from Clevedon with Jill Price of Bridgwater BCL. At 2pm, Clevedon are again in action in the ladies’ triples when Taunton Deane provide the opposition.

Action continues at 6.30pm when Saints’ Ken Uglow, Don Bailey, Barrie Forse and Andrews Owens take on a quartet from Bridgwater BCL in the area semi-final of the National Fours.

Saints have been celebrating their own players’ success in national competition. Barrie Forse will be contesting the national finals of the Over-60 singles for the third successive year after a fine win in the area final at Taunton Deane.

It was then the turn of team-mate, Andrew Owens, who reached the area final of the national singles by defeating Louis Ridout, who had recently returned from England duty in the home international series.

■ The Chasers serene progress towards victory in the Pro Wash Open Triples suffered a setback when the Goodwoods emerged from mid-table obscurity to deny the league leaders.

Pat Pattenden, Bob Roberts and Don Bailey had to come from behind to record a memorable win. Meanwhile, the Jackpots and the Yankees made no mistakes in their fixtures as they fight to stay in touch.

■ St Andrews ladies triumphed once again in the Optika League. Playing at Nailsea, the ladies triumphed 3-0.

Myra Bailey’s triple were the first to finish with a hard-fought win, followed by Ann Campbell’s foursome, who were never in trouble and finished with a comfortable 22-shot victory.

The pairing of Carolina Venn and Meg Favis were having a hard time and were three shots down, but the game was won and Nailsea conceded the match.

St Andrews men played Ilminster in the county two rink last week and despite them playing some England internationals, Saints only lost out by two shots, winning one rink and losing the other.

In the county league, Bristol proved too strong, despite sharing the rinks again. At home, Tony Steer’s rink had a good nine shot win, but Don Bailey’s four lost out by six shots.

At Bristol, Barrie Forse’s four managed a two shot win, whilst Andrew Owens quartet went down by 17 shots.

In the mixed friendly against North Petherton, St Andrews were outbowled by the home side, Alex Horsburgh having the only winning rink.
