Clarence defeat Woodspring by just one shot

Clarence defeated Woodspring in the Weston & District Mixed League by just one shot.

AN 11-shot victory by Joan Davis’s rink earned Clarence a one-shot victory over Woodspring in the Weston & District Mixed League.

Davis, Pam Fowler, Barry Benn and Pat Taylor won 18-7 in the home rink. Away at Wooodspring, Veronica Jones’s team battled valiantly, losing by 10 shots, while Tony Mannion and his rink did well to draw 12-12.

This meant the later home rink, skipped by Gerry Barlow, needed to draw for Clarence to win the match and they duly did so, giving us victory by 45-44.

Clarence rink scores – home: Pam Fowler, Barry Benn, Pat Taylor, Joan Davis 18-7; Jill Coles, Ray Badman, Rita Hinde, Gerry Barlow 9-9. Away: Rod Smith, John Kelloway, Mary Hawkins, Veronica Jones 6-16; Marlene Woods, Janet Anning, Mary Davison 12-12.

ST ANDREWS ladies lost out in the Yetton Plate to a strong Thornbury side.

The only winning rink was that of Monica Pattenden away at Thornbury 22-15. Meg Favis’ away rink struggled from the start losing out 13-28. At home, Jackie Ware’s four went 8-1 up, but the opposition picked up 11 shots to be 8-12 up at 10 ends, a fightback from the home side saw them level at 15-15 at 18 ends, but then dropped four, two and two, to lose 15-23.

Ann Campbell’s rink were up against it from the start, 1-11 down after five ends, but recovered a little to lose 14-21.

Malcolm Simpson played his county singles against C Gilbert of Taunton Deane and at 19-20, he held the two shots required for game, but Gilbert killed the end and drew the winner on the next end, Malcolm losing 19-21.

WEDMORE defeated Taunton in an exciting league fixture but seven shots.

In the last, Taunton needed five shots to win the match, the other leg having just finished. They duly put five woods round the jack and Wedmore skipper Ron Barron played a running shot into a Taunton wood which cannons into the jack, knocking it to two well-placed Wedmore woods.

Wedmore won 22-15 at home having started slowly, taking the lead on end five and keeping their noses in front to win 12 of 21 ends.

In the away match, Dave Nicholls’ men did well to claim a 13-13 draw in a tight low-scoring game.

They played an extra end which would act as a tie breaker if the Wedmore game also ended in a draw, which Taunton won.

Wedmore 35, Taunton 28: D Collins, K Pettit, C Moss, R Barron 22-15; R Bull, K Burt, R Newell, D Nicholls 13-13.

In a mixed friendly at home to Congresbury, Wedmore enjoyed the new year with a resounding two-rink victory and a 58-26 overall score.

Alan Birch’s side had a field day, winning 12 of 18 ends thanks in no small measure to scoring five shots on four different ends, resulting in a memorable 33-11 score.

Mike Green’s team on the other hand only won eight ends but led throughout due to winning their ends by good margins and losing by small ones resulting in a healthy 25-15 win.
