St Andrews defeated Clevedon in the first round of the national Denny Cup.
A strong finish earned St Andrews the notable scalp of Clevedon in the first round of the national Denny Cup inter-club championship.
With three ends left against a strong Clevedon line-up, Saints were trailing by seven shots overall and looking set for a place in the consolation Denny Plate.
But then Nick Sell’s home rink, trailing by 14, picked up eight shots on those final ends to lose by only six. The news came through from Clevedon that the two rinks there were all-square with one end to play, which meant that the match was level overall.
Suddenly, it was all over. At Clevedon, Ken Uglow, lead on Barrie Forse’s St Andrews rink, put his two woods close to the jack, Richard Venn did likewise, Lee Stocker also got close, as did Forse, and Clevedon’s back-end duo fired all four of their woods off-target. The result was a six and Clevedon’s second away rink, the last to finish, could do nothing about it as Saints won by eight.
St Andrews 77, Clevedon 69 – home: G Millard, G Webber, D Johnston, A Owens 20-13; J Wilkes, L Yeates, G Wride, N Sell 21-27. Away: K Uglow, R Venn, L Stocker, B Forse 22-12; M Campbell, K Curtis, P Villis, S Davies 14-17.
There was an equally as dramatic finish to St Andrews A’s National Over-60 Double Rink tie against Taunton Deane A.
With Barrie Forse’s away rink having won by six, home skip Don Bailey, six down, knew that he had to get shot on the last end to win the match. A weighted shot by the opposing skip gave his team three shots, but Bailey replied in kind, taking the jack to earn two and put Saints through.
St Andrews A 29, Taunton Deane A 27 – home: J Wilkes, R Venn, B Reeves, D Bailey 12-16. Away: K Uglow, J Keay, M Campbell, B Forse 17-11.
St Andrews B 26, Ilminster B 33 – home: C Coffin, D Favis, B May, G Wride 17-18. Away: G Millard, T Yeeles, K Curtis, G Guest 9-15.
St Andrews Ladies went out of the national inter-club Yetton Trophy at the first stage, losing by 12 shots to Purnell.
Imogen Cracknell, just turned 15, skipped a Yetton rink for the first time and her quartet did well to win by four away. Her fellow county junior Rebecca McMillan skipped a winning rink at home, but the deficit on the two others was Saints’ downfall.
St Andrews Ladies 63, Purnell 75 – home: M Millard, B Goddard, M McMillan, R McMillan 19-15; J Forse, J Rush, A Powell, M Favis 10-25. Away: C Venn, M Frost, J Pitman, A Campbell 15-21; C Hopes, D Baker, S Sinclair, I Cracknell 19-14.
Victoria Ladies were involved in an extremely close game in the Yetton Trophy against Wedmor, with excellent performances on all rinks.
The rink of Hilary Chesters, Lorraine Richards, Chris Stevens and skip Margaret Hillman won by nine shots to turn the game for Victoria, who won by two shots.
The club fielded a mixed team in the Egham Trophy, but were beaten by St Andrews, losing on all four rinks, the best result being a one-shot defeat for Brenda Williams, Hannah Frye, Pete Wyatt and Mike Stocker.
In a two-rink mixed game against Puriton, Victoria struggled on both rinks losing by 17 shots.
The mixed squad had a far better game against North Petherton, with the rink of Hannah Frye, Richard Hollier, Kay Wilson and Sue Newman recording a four-shot victory to soften the blow of a 21-shot defeat.
The men were drawn against a strong Bristol team in the Denny Cup and were emphatically beaten.
