St Andrews were well beaten by Bristol in the first Wessex League game of the year.

ST ANDREWS faced Bristol Bowling Club in the first Wessex League game of the year and as expected the competition was tough going.

Away, the Bristol rinks were dominant winning comfortably. Will Harrison’s rink went down by 10 shots and Barrie Forse’s rink by 25.

At home, both rinks fought hard, Phil Villis’s rink went 8-0 down and fought back to a six shot lead, only to succumb and lose out by four shots. Saints did manage to salvage two points with a win on Don Bailey’s rink, who managed a three shot win.

St Andrews 66, Bristol BC 102 (Wessex League): K Uglow, B Reeves, D Favis, D Bailey 17-14; T Hyde, G Millard, P Aldus, P Villis 20-24; D Stanton, A Yeeles, S Davies, B Forse 17-42; M Campbell, G Tofte, R Davey, W Harrison 12-22.

IN A closely-fought county double rink match against Puriton, both sides won the away rink, but Puriton won by one shot overall.

Wedmore’s away team won by three shots, including a perfect eight on only their second end: R Bull, K Pettit, R Thurkettle, S Eastment. The home side lost by four: S Heeley, D Nicholls, R Barron, E Payne.

Wedmore entertained Chew Stoke in a mixed friendly, each club winning one rink. D Stansfield’s team won by 21-19, but B Carson’s four lost 9-26, making the overall score 30-45 to Chew Stoke.
