A ladies trio from Victoria finished runners-up in the Sunday Triples, the opening event of the Weston Ladies Open Bowling Tournament.

Three ladies from Weston’s Victoria club finished runners-up in the Sunday Triples, opening event of the 63rd Weston Ladies’ Open Bowling Tournament at Clarence Park.

Brenda Williams, Hannah Frye and Kaye Wilson topped their group to reach the first/second place final. Their opponents were the other group-winners, husband and wife Nick and Carol Grenfell and Carol’s son Dean Thomas, all from the Fry’s Club, Keynsham.

In one of the tightest Sunday Triples finals for years, the Victoria trio were just edged out 6-5. Their £120 runners-up prize was some consolation. The winners pocketed £270.

There was plenty of local interest in the third/fourth place final between the runners-up in the groups. It proved rather one-sided as Marysia Angove (Clarence), Fiona Waters (Victoria) and Barbara Mumford (Welford, Warwickshire) beat Adrian Gardiner (Clarence), Val Gardiner and Pat Taylor (both Wessex) 12-4.

The two finals were played in rain, which had just held off for the opening ceremony, performed by Weston Mayor Cllr Alan Peak and the tournament’s main sponsors, James and Alison Harwood of opticians Optika.

The tournament continued until Saturday, with singles, pairs, mixed pairs, triples and mixed fours competitions.
