Winning start for Woodspring

Woodspring Indoor Bowls Club made a winning start to their Weston Mixed League season,

WOODSPRING Indoor Bowls Club played their first match in the Weston Mixed League against St Andrews, winning their two home rinks.

On rink one, they only managed to complete 13 ends, but won by 12 shots. Rink two took 11 of the 15 ends played and they also won by 12 shots. Both the away rinks lost, rink by 13 shots and four shots overall, as Woodspring won by seven shots.

Woodspring 61, St Andrews 54 – home S Noyes, R Nock, J Holloway, B Webber 20-8; J Beat, S Collard, J McKenzie, B Cullen,18-6. Away: P Wynne, D Wynne, M Williams, T Williams 10-23; S Andrews, G Sansam, S Hedges, C Hedges 13-17.

THIRTY-two bowlers from Woodspring, other clubs, friends and supporters enjoyed a four-day bowling break at The Toorak Hotel, Torquay.

Four matches were played against other teams present, one of these was from Rotterdam, Holland, and consisted of national players getting some practise for their national championships. Mandy Sutton again organised this break and was warmly thanked by everyone for all her efforts.

ST ANDREWS Ladies began their Yetton Trophy campaign with an impressive win against Isle of Wedmore.

At home, skips Meg Favis and Monica Pattenden steered their rinks to victory with displays of teamwork and no little skill. Meanwhile at Wedmore, captain Sue Sinclair and Ann Campbell, for whom Marie McMillan had an excellent match, led dogged resistance on a pacy green to secure the win.

Arch rivals Taunton Deane will provide a stiffer challenge in the next round.

St Andrews 92, Isle of Wedmore 74: J Forse, S Priory, A Powell, M Pattenden 25-12; C Venn, M Wride, J Ware, M Favis 28-16; M Millard, M McMillan, J Pitman, A Campbell 18-23; F Allen, S Glenville, R McMillan, S Sinclair 21-23.

Local rivals Woodspring provided the opposition in the first fixture in the Weston Mixed League and home advantage counted at both venues.

At the end of a gruelling encounter, it was Woodspring who came out on top by seven shots.

St Andrews 54, Woodspring 61: P Wilfan, A Greenwood, E Hooper, P Villis 17-13; M Forse, W Weller, B Forse, B Reeves 23-10; A Cooper, S Carr, G Webber, R Gill 8-20; P Smart, D Cooper, R Brereton, K Curtis 6-18.

VICTORIA started the indoor season with an excellent win against St Andrews B in the first round of the English Bowling Association double rink competition.

Victoria won both rinks with each rink scoring 23 shots and earning a place in the next round against Donyatt.

The mixed team played Puriton in a friendly which finished a friendly draw, each winning one rink. Victoria’s winning rink was led by Hannah Frye with Chris Stevens, Roy Bromet and Mike Cooper.

Victoria 46, St Andrews B 19: C Santosuosso, M Milliner, C Heal, M Stocker 23-11; R Hollier, R Rockett, D Jones, M Cooper 23-8.

Victoria 24, Puriton 24: C Santosuosso, R Bailey, W Nicholls, M Hillman 13-16; H Frye, C Stevens, R Bromet, M Campbell 11-8.
