Ian Adams enjoyed a winning week at Brean as he claimed victory no less than three times.

He started off with a countback win in the Seniors Captains Cup and followed it up with an impressive weekend win double.

In recent years the Seniors Captains Cup has be known for producing some low scoring and the opening round of the 2021 edition was no exception with countback required to decide the winner.

Adams and Chris Stephens carded nett 63s, but Adams had the better back nine, as third place went to Barry Fellows for his nett 65, ahead of Mel Brown and Graham Exton who completed the top six with 66s.

Saturday's competition was the qualifying round for the Upton & Scott Trophy as the leading four pairs from the Greensomes event progressed to play in the semi-finals and then hopefully the final over the summer months.

Four of the 35 pairs returned scores of 44 points and will now compete for the silverware, with countback rules deciding the finishing positions and draw for the semi-finals.

The back six holes separated the first two places with Adams and Andy Chapple taking victory ahead of runners-up Nigel Ellis and Phil Barry, who face third place finishers Murray Parsons and Tony Richards for a place in the final.

Completing the last four line-up is Chris Fairchild and Gordy Wheelaghan who had the lowest number of points on the homeward run and therefore will face Adams and Chapple in the knockout stages.

Adams completed his weekend double with victory in Sunday's Super Series Stableford as he racked up 43 points from the white tees and defeated Jason Cracroft on countback over the back three holes.

Since deciding to change his irons soon after lockdown Adams has produced some prize winning form and the new weapons performed well again as he claimed the 10 Super Series Order of Merit points on offer.

Cracroft produced a tidy bogey-free card on his way to the runners-up prize, one clear of Parsons in third. as he edged out junior Zak Jones over the back nine. Fifth place went to Mark Ashley on 41.

Brean began their quest for the Somerset Bowl as they faced holders Clevedon on home turf on Sunday.

With the event cancelled in 2020 due to COVID, this tie was actually drawn out of the hat over 18 months ago and was due to be played at a neutral venue.

The decision was made by the county to change this plan to ease scheduling difficulties and home advantage was decided by the toss of a coin, won by Brean.

Club champion Dan Broom and captain elect Barry Fellows, a former Clevedon member, led the way with an emphatic 7&5 win in the top match before former club champions Dave Porter and Phil Hodgson teamed up to win the second match on the 16th green.

Match three looked to heading the same way with leading left hander John Cullinan and Pro Shop assistant Josh Heseltine-Smith three up with three to play, but the Clevedon pair fought back to win the 16th and 17th before a lengthy birdie putt by Cullinan at the last settled the tie.

The final two games went the way of Clevedon to make the final score 3-2 but Brean, who won the Bowls 10 years ago, now wait to find out if they will face Bleadon Hill or Stockwood Vale next.

Ladies captain elect Bev Cranley was the winner of the April Stableford after a superb round of 43 points, built on a fast start as she collected an impressive 13 points in her first four holes.

After a slight mid-round wobble she recovered well and a nett eagle at the 17th secured victory, three ahead of Sue Wright, and a handicap reduction ahead of her next round. Lyn Bird was three points further back in third.

The Seniors captain elect John Cranley won for the second successive Thursday as he added the April Seniors Medal to his victory list with a nett 67, one ahead of his nearest Division One challengers Mike Hurman and Neil Barker, after wife Bev's win in the Ladies Stableford two days earlier.

David Morris claimed Division Two with a nett 69, one clear of Graham Exton and two ahead of third-placed Chris Stephens.

Dave Glasby won the April Midweek Stableford with 44 points, two ahead of Jeff Milton as San Grosvenor took third on countback from Tim Amy after both posted 41 points.
