Andrew Smallwood produced the best score of the Captains Day Medal at Brean and was awarded the Captains Cup for his efforts.

It was the last card to be returned in the morning competition, which evaded any disruption from the forecast thunder and lightning, as Smallwood posted a nett 63 for top spot in the Third Division.

Small was two ahead of playing partner Andrew Pound, who edged out Jason Cracroft after a back nine countback.

Gail Mason continued her good form of late as she defended the Lady Captains Cup, overcoming a disastrous ninth hole to post a superb nett 67 to win by three and repeat her victory of 2020.

The runners-up spot was decided by a countback as Millie Jones edged out Lyn Bird after both carded nett 70s, with captain elect Bev Cranley fourth on 71 after a day of good scoring by the Ladies.

Dan Broom was another of the late finishers to taste success in the men's top flight as the five handicapper matched the course par of 69 for a nett 64 and gross prize as well.

Cousin Tom Broom returned to form to finish as runner-up with a nett 65, while Steve Jones took third on 66.

Head greenkeeper Max Smith won Division Two with nett 66, one ahead of Mark Banczyk-Gee, who beat Clive Goode and recently married Steve Hill on countback.

Smith also featured in the winning team in the traditional Captains Day Cross Country Scramble which made a welcome return after a few years absence for various reasons.

The nine-hole layout devised by PGA Pro Andrew March tested the players course management skills but was enjoyed by all as Smith joined forces with Ron Edmondson and Brian Read to post a nett score of 26.5.

Matching the winner’s gross score of 30 but with fewer shots was Steve Eley, CJ Organ and Scott Lismore who took second as Dave Glasby, Clive Goode and Nigel Ellis ended in third place.

Team Jones enjoyed the taste of victory in Sunday's Open Scramble competition as brothers Steve and Paul were joined by father David to return a score of 53.

Steve produced the shot of the day with a hole-in-one at the fourth as his six iron tee shot disappeared into the hole for an ace. And with a host of teams scoring 54 it proved a crucial blow and one that ultimately saw them top the leaderboard.

A multiple countback was needed to decide the remaining prizes with Stewart Garrett, Tony Groves and Jason Kidley deemed the best of the rest in second, ahead of Brean's Steve Barker and Mendip Spring duo Chris and Paul Vowles.

The final two prizes were taken by Brean's Ryan Mogg, Simon Eydes and Nick Aspey in fourth and Dave Mann, Paul Bacon and Jake Taylor-Price in fifth ahead of the Corbett/Hunt and Jackson trio.

Chris Stephens produced a 47-point return to win the July Seniors Stableford and Over-65s Shield that was also up for grabs as he headed Vincent Ford by three in Division Two.

Jeff Harvey's 42 points in third would have been good enough to win in the top flight, where Mats Mattsson claimed victory with 39, two ahead of Ron Edmondson, Roger Blackwell and Mike Allen.

Barrie Tucker collected the Phil Fudge Shield for the leading score in the Seniors July Medal, with his nett 63 three ahead of Pete Dunn and Alan Eboe.
