THE senior's section at Brean Golf Club dusted off their clubs for their first competitive action of 2010 last week when the January Medal was played for.

Most players struggled with the cold and windy conditions, but two players returned exceptional scores. Barrie Yearsley has certainly become a player to be reckoned with in his short time as a member at Brean and this was born out by an excellent nett 65 which claimed first position.

Another Barry was second and Barry Tucker can feel hard done by that his nett 66 didn't win. He finished well clear of the next player, Tony Anderson, on nett 72.

The Channel Course at Burnham and Berrow was the venue for the Saturday's event as almost 30 players contested a Stableford. Coming out on top was head professional Andrew March as he used his knowledge of the layout to good effect as he posted 36 points.

This was one ahead of Tony Groves who battled his way to 35 points. Third place was secured after countback on 34 points with Dave Lockwood coming out on top.

Oake Manor was the venue on Sunday for the Rally Trophy. This was a blind pairs event where after everyone has completed play the cards are drawn to determine the partners. A report on the victors of this event will appear next week as at the time of writing the results were not to hand.

Lady captain Sue Radcliffe is hosting a pamper day on February 23, where lady members past and present can be pampered during the afternoon after a nine-hole qualifier competition in the morning.

THERE was a reminder that winter was far from over for the seniors at Isle of Wedmore on recently.

Even the road up to the course was slippy in the early morning frost which meant the February stableford was on the winter greens.

Star of the day was undoubtedly last year's club captain John Cutter, now retired from both the captaincy and work and obviously enjoying more hours on the course.

In his first competition with the seniors he amassed 43 stableford points to finish four points ahead of anyone else as clear winner of Division 2. Second and third places were decided on countback with Mike Hewart just squeezing out Bob Jepps, both with 39 points.

Points were hard to come by in Division 1. Both Tony Metcalfe and Paul Burkhill scored a creditable 39 points with Tony taking first place on countback. John Viney was third with 35 points.

By the time the ladies played on Thursday, the frost had given way to a drizzly rain and the pragmatic decision was made to reduce the competition to nine holes.

The format this week was greensomes, and perhaps inevitably over a shortened course, the result was always going to be tight. In the event, the pairs filling the first three places all scored 19 points.

Winners were Margaret Rogers and Mary Clark, with Ruth Pearson and Gay McWhinney in second place and Alison Buckton and Aileen Robertson coming third.
