Judo star Toby Attwood won a bronze medal at the recent British Judo Championships.

TOBY Attwood, from Cheddar who attends the Kings of Wessex School and trains at Bradley Stoke Judo Club in Gloucestershire, competed in the British Judo Championships held in Sheffield.

This is the top event on the judo calendar in Britain, and in a very tough group (U34kg), Toby was drawn against a strong opponent in the first round.

Toby took his time to get to grips with his opponent, but finally once he had taken him to ground, Toby showed his fantastic newaza skills and pinned his opponent to win the first fight.

Toby then lost his second fight to the eventual winner and this really should have been the final.

He then had to regather his thoughts as he had a long journey to the bronze final.

Toby’s groundwork skills came in to play as he won the remainder of his four fights.

In the bronze medal final, Toby was up against a lad from London who beat Toby in last year’s competition. Toby threw him within 30 seconds and held him tight to win the bronze medal.

This was a fantastic achievement and next weekend is the turn of older brother Ben in the U21 Junior Judo Nationals.
