Isle of Wedmore golfers managed to beat the weather and play three competitions in the past week.

GOLFERS at Wedmore dodged the worst of the weather, fitting in three competitions between the frost, wind and rain.

The seniors kicked things off with a bowmaker which produced the closest possible of finishes with three teams all finishing on 80 points, leaving countback to decide the ultimate winners.

First place went to the three Davids, Taylor, Dams and Bees, who just edged ahead of John Russell, Bernard Abbott and David Hollingdale, with third place going to Mike Peacock, Ivor Monelle and Gordon Newbery.

The ladies played a Stableford with nine scores out of 15 holes played counting towards the total score. This allowed players to dodge both the worst of the weather and the worst of their scores and produced some high point scores.

Sue Tarry led the way, scoring 24 points on her best nine holes. This was just one point better than Pam Berry, newly joined from Taunton Vale, with Angela Crosby a further shot behind in third place.

Sunday saw the first mixed greensomes of the new year, which resulted in a first in this series of competitions. A shortage of men meant Dawn Chadwick and Jan Jenkins went out as a mixed pair and beat all the men to take first place.

Only just though as their 43 points was equalled by Saybria Sims and Brian Webber, but two trips to the water on their penultimate hole proved expensive for them as they lost out on countback. Third place went to Trish Phelps and Nick Parker with 41 points.

IT WAS a weekend of team events at Brean Golf Club with two trophies up for grabs in varying formats of the game.

Pete Barton shot a best of the day nett 66 the pairs aggregate medal and with his partner Martyn Cahill producing a steady, if not spectacular nett 75, it bring them victory.

Their 141 total was two better than any other pair could manage in the demanding format, needing both partners to play well and avoid any real disaster holes.

A three-way countback was needed to decide the runners-up, but that was awarded to Pete Dunn and Mike Porter, ahead of Richard Triscott/Gordy Wheelaghan and Jerry Brueford/Roy Fletcher.

The Percy Underwood Trophy is a foursomes Stableford event and the alternate shot format is possibly the quickest of any golf format.

The winning duo of Steve Eley and Pete Dunn did not hang around as they racked up 41 points and had completed their 18 holes in under three hours. They won by three points from Phil Hodgson and Gordy Wheelaghan, who in turn relegated Tom Broom and Dave Jones into third on countback.

WESTON’S Nick Bohin achieved a hole-in-one on the par three 14th hole, using only a wedge.

Playing in the men’s Stableford and competing with 40mph wind, it was quite an achievement.
