Captain’s day at Worlebury

THE highlight of the week at Worlebury Golf Club was captain’s day, which was hosted by Keith Wharton.

As this is Keith’s second stint in the role, he knew what to expect and he and his hard-working team put on a fantastic day for the members.

The sun shone brightly, the course was in superb condition and the day culminated in a social event in the clubhouse which was well supported. A sizeable sum was raised for Weston Hospicecare which is Keiths’ chosen charity this year.

Continuing his recent run of success, the men’s competition was won by first team captain, Chris Davidson and one of his teammates, Matt Blackman. Their 50 points gave them a narrow win over Pete Gilpin and David Mellor, who had 49, with the youthful partnership of Dan Bovingdon and Luke Matthews third with 48.

The ladies’ competition was won by captain Pam Burnell and her partner Sue Kinch. Their 49 points comfortably beating the strong partnership of Hazel Cox and Jill Phillips, who took second on countback from Angela Bagley and Ginette Baker.

The junior competition over 15 holes was won by Ryan Thrupp and Alix Kew with 44 points, followed by Michael Nicholls and Owen Denyer on 32.

There were prizes for nearest the pin on all the par threes, the winners being Dave Pope, Steve Archibald, Terry Bradley and Frank Hopkinson.

Keith would like to thank his many helpers, who made it a day to remember.

The club hosted the Gertrude Johnson Cup in very windy conditions. The format is a mixed foursomes medal and the winners with a good score of 70.5 were Angela Bagley and Tony Westren. Runners-up were Carole and Gerry Miles with 71.5.

The next day the ladies played for the Daisy Payne Cup, this time in the rain. The winner was Michelle James with a score of 74 (22) and the runner-up was her playing partner for the day, Pam Burnell with 75 (14).

Bronze Division: Joyce Tiney 35 pts; Lisa Griffiths 35. Copper Division: Kate Brown 31 pts.

SCORING was good for the Weston seniors’ Salmon Trophy and Veterans Cup on a bright summer’s day.

David Rowland won the Salmon Trophy with a superb gross score of 71 (66) 40 pts. John Morgan won the Veterans cup with 37 points.

Results - Salmon Trophy: David Rowland 40 pts; Peter Hardaway 38; Nigel Jillings 37; Tony Barry 35.

Veterans Cup: John Morgan 37 pts; Trevor Knott 36; David Andow 35; Graham Tripp 34.

THE Jones Bros team tasted success in the Brean Golf Club pro celebrity event for the third time with a score of 81 points.

Brothers Eric and David, along with David’s sons Paul and Steve, seem to have found the perfect combination for this competition as they always feature around the leading places.

The event was again raising money for the Injured Jockeys Fund and in a change to the usual format, a shotgun start was deployed so the 23 teams spread to all parts of the course at Brean Leisure Park.

Brean professional Andrew March might rue the recent lessons he has given to the Jones family, as it may have prevented his team from winning. He led the Brean ladies team to second spot as they had the best back nine score of five teams on 78.

This was helped by a stunning birdie at the 18th hole by ladies’ captain Sheila Rouse. Jenny Vaughan and Annie Williams completed the quartet which dovetailed nicely and the team also scored the only two of the day.

Third place was the Butterworth Jones & Co team also on 78 points. Chris John, Mark Maxwell, Ryan Bartlett and Tony Simes received their prizes from Robert John from the firm.

Next were the Heineken 2 team. Joining entertainer Sammy Small were Brean members Tony Groves, John Mardon and Alan Marshall. The final prize winners were the Brean Golf Club team led by club captain Brian Read, Roger Vaughan, Pete Dunn and Kevin Davies. The unlucky four to miss out were Tom’s Boys made up of Steve Bateman, Charlie Kelly, Chris Fairchild and Steve Mason.

IT was a good day for golfers from Weston at Wedmore as both the seniors and ladies held their invitation days.

David Bates, a former Weston member and his partner Jim Ness from Weston, led the way home with 43 points. Keith Thomas, who used to play at The Mendip with his partner C Davies, who still plays there, were second on 42.

Completing the set were Steve Lawrence and his partner from Launceston, his former club, Michael Perkins with 40.

Wedmore ladies’ captain Deidre Wheadon won the invitation day, partnering Di Walker, this year’s captain from Weston. They amassed 46 points to take them three points clear of Sue Chambers and Bev King. June Smith with partner Julie Ward were a point further back in third place.

A gusty wind kept scores down in the monthly Stableford. Tim Harris led the way in Division 1 with 37 points, which was just a point ahead of both Terry Clark and Josh Barwell.

Evergreen Frank Denniston was in good form, winning Division 2 with 40 points. This was four clear of Tom Smith, who edged out Rob Davis on countback. The margin was even greater in Division 3, won by Robert Cornish with 42 points, followed by Pete Beavon with 36. Steve Baker was a further point back in third.

There were some good scores from the ladies with Chris Simpson winning silver with 37 points, four clear of Sue Tarry. The Bronze Division was won by Jenny Thomas on 36, closely followed by Vera Ireland with 35.

BREAN assistant professional Roy Baker played in the third of this season’s Titleist/FootJoy Young Pro’s League at Filton Golf Club in Bristol.

He continued his good form as he ended the day in a tie for fifth spot after a four over par round of 74. He suffered a double bogey on his closing hole which dropped him down a couple of positions on the final leaderboard.

He also improved his overall ranking in the season long points table when he moved up in to seventh spot with two rounds remaining.

Playing alongside Roy in the betterball part of the event was Brean member Tom Broom. Together they combined for a score of 35 Stableford points, but this left them six points behind the winning score.

Barrie Yearsley won the seniors’ June Stableford and with it the Vic Rowe Trophy. He scored 38 points in the sunshine to win by one from Roger Phillips, who was another point ahead of third-placed Dave Bradley.

After two runners-up finishes last weekend, Stewart Garrett went one better this time around and was the winner of the Super Series Stableford. He scored 39 points to secure a two point win ahead of Graham Exton and Mike Chaloner on 37.

Exton edged out Chaloner for the runners-up spot on countback.

After a profitable time points wise last weekend, the Avalon Division 2 side suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat against near neighbours Burnham & Berrow.
