Uphill Castle Reserves defeated Sporting Weston 2-1 to lift the Weston & District League Charity Cup.

Sporting Weston 1

Uphill Castle Reserves 2

Martin Avery’s Uphill Castle Reserves made it a dream double for the club when they lifted the Weston and District League Charity Cup with a 2-1 victory over Sporting Weston at Nailsea.

The silverware will now sit proudly alongside the Somerset County League Division Two West Trophy won by the first team.

Uphill opened the scoring two minutes before the interval when Lee Harvey’s free-kick went through the legs of Samuel Cooper.

Playing up the slope in the second period, Castle re-doubled their efforts, but Sporting drew level with a header from a corner.

Avery’s charges then found another gear, forcing seven corners, followed by inspirational captain Jack Riney drawing Cooper into a fine save to deny his header from a free-kick, before Avery hit the post with a volley from 20 yards.

From a corner, Liam Clarke’s superb header was handled by a Sporting player on the line and Daniel Thomas netted from the spot.

With seven minutes remaining, Avery made a raft of substitutions to slow the game down, with Thomas and Riney in particular proving effective by running the ball towards the corners.

The man of the match award, kindly sponsored by Fusion of 35-39 St. James Street, went to James Devanney.

Locking Park 0

Portishead Town A 2

Locking Park lost their final Division 1 game of the season 2-0 to Portishead Town A.

Portishead took the lead after 10 minutes when a cross was not dealt with by the Park defence and fell to an away attacker who finished well from close range

Park had the chance to equalise after a cross from James Bromley was handled in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Michael Bollard was given the ball, but his powerful spot kick flew wide of the post.

Five minutes before half-time, the away side got their second after defensive confusion at a corner saw Locking keeper Farrow having the ball taken from his grasp by his own defender and the resulting loose ball ending up in the back of the net.

The second half saw changes from Park to try to get back into the game, but a well-organised Portishead and worsening conditions saw the game finish 2-0.

Locking Park are in the Atwell Shield final against Cleeve West Town Reserves on Saturday (3.30pm) at Winscombe Recreational Ground. All support is welcome.
