Hornets 33 pts

PLAYER coach Alec Chase made amends for a yellow card in the first minute of the second half with a try six minutes from time to seal the win for Hornets in a close contest.

From the off, the well-drilled Burnham pack put the visitors under pressure. Eventually No 8 Hogarth managed to pick and go deep in his 22, the ball was recycled quickly and fed out to Cornish who set off on a mazy run to go over half the length of the park to score.

As Burnham continued to pressurise, the visitors forced a turnover and allowed the visitors to break out. The backs did all the work and Jones crashed over. He added the extras to make it 12-0.

As the half drew to a close, Hornets managed another turnover and Gadd made the final break to offload to Vinnicombe to score, with Jones adding the extras. From the restart, Burnham managed a turnover and moved the ball wide for their wing to cross in the corner.

After the break, Chase was soon shown a yellow card and Burnham took the chance to score out wide. Soon after, Burnham scored two converted tries to lead 24-19.

With Gadd now playing at fly-half, he put a kick behind the Burnham wing and was beaten to the ball by Jones, who scored and converted a try to give Hornets back the lead 24-26.

The final score came from a line-out however, as Hogarth fed Kent who in turn slipped the ball to Chase for him to burrow over. Jones added the conversion to bring his tally to 18 on the day.

A BRACE of tries from Charlie Carter secured a hard-fought away win against Wellington to end the home side’s 100 per cent home record and take Hornets to the brink of the Somerset 3 South title.

Excellent defence from flankers Connor Morse and Ben Masters kept Wellington at bay in the first 10 minutes, but a loose kick gifted Wellington a converted try. Hornets hit back with a try for James Gould, before the sides traded penalties.

Carter’s first try and a conversion by Connolly gave Hornets a 15-10 half-time lead.

After the break, the quick thinking Carter took a free kick quickly and raced into the corner to score his second try. Wellington reduced to arrears to 20-17 with a converted try.

Direct running from Gould and Jules Raynor got Hornets into the Wellington 22. Carter found Paul Sheppard who had the final say with a 25-metre drop goal.

Man of the match was James Gould.
