Cheddar Valley Shooting Club held its presenation a the Strawberry Special in Draycott.

The various Cheddar Valley Shooting Club winter activities have finished and the results were celebrated at the 34th annual meeting held at the Strawberry Special, Draycott.

This year we had there were five ladies and 14 men shooters, unfortunately no juniors, with president Vera Lee presenting the trophies.

In the Somerset, Bristol and District Winter Leagues, medal winners included Mike Griffin, Pete Jones, Simon Ellis and Steve Olsen.

This year’s most improved shooter in the winter leagues was Tony Thwaite and the rest of the members returned averages of about 99 per cent of last year’s scores. The Mad Hatter Trophy was won by Ruth Bell, repeating last year’s result.

In the handicap competition, Cliff Simmons and Paul O’Bryan tied, however Cliff won on a countback.

The Ken Lane Trophy is a knockout competition with teams of three shooters and the final was between Simmons, Paula Allott and club captain Mike Soars (team B) and Griffin, Bell and Elisabeth Gravy (team C). Team A beat team C by two points 298 to 300.

Simmons again won the Andy Hobbs Trophy and Ruth Bell collected the Peter Crandon Trophy for outdoor shooting at 50 metres.

The Battle of the Sexes is always a serious match with Pat Williams girls’ team beating Simon Ellis’ boy’s team with two out of the three rounds going to the girls.

The H Leonard Williams Trophy went to Mike Griffin and the pairs event went to Simon Ellis and Elisabeth Gravy. Dave Williams took the Captain’s Cup for the most improved shooter over the year, based on internal club averages.

The Keith Thickett Memorial Trophy (club champion), an honour based on the best six groups, rapids and deliberates, was again won by Mike Griffin with scores of 586, 563 and 600 respectively.

Cheddar Valley Rifle Club is an established and fully approved 0.22 calibre target rifle shooting club with their own 25-yard indoor range in the village. The club welcome new members and all equipment needed is provided. The club is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings between 7.30-11pm.
