Clarence edge home by one shot in the Turnbull Cup

CLARENCE continued their nail-biting progress in the Somerset Turnbull Cup with their second successive one-shot victory.

This time, their victims were home team Congresbury, with the match decided by an umpire’s measure as the light faded. Clarence led narrowly for much of the game, but fell a few behind. But the finishing power that had seen them through the previous round at Ashcombe Park again proved decisive as, in the last two ends, Clarence picked up nine shots to Congresbury’s one.

Also as at Ashcombe, the decisive rink was Brian Ballinger’s, the last to finish. They won by 13 shots, including that crucial umpire’s measure, which gave the verdict to club captain Brendan Duffy’s wood.

Roger Burrough’s rink stormed back from 10-0 down to win by four, including a seven on the 11th end.

Clarence Blues’ Over-60s League fixture away to Ashcombe Crusaders was called off by the home team because it was too wet. However, the Golds, Clarence’s second team in the Over-60s League, were able to play their away match with Ashcombe Templars in lovely weather the following day and earned a fine victory.

They finished up on five of the six rinks, skipped by Mike Davies, club captain Brendan Duffy, John Edwards, John Hayes and Maurice Phillips, for overall victory by 22 shots. Phillips and his triple picked up nine shots over the last four ends, while the Davies trio came back from 8-2 down to win.

Clarence’s mixed friendly at home to St Dunstans had to be abandoned at tea when torrential rain flooded the green. The visitors were ahead at the time.

A torrential shower half an hour before the scheduled start threatened to put paid to Clarence’s home game against tourists Llansawel. But No 3 green was ruled playable and the Welshmen enjoyed themselves, both on and off, the rink, to win by 11 shots.

Clarence finished up on only two of the six rinks, those skipped by Richard Crawford and Mick Edlin. There was a lively atmosphere in the clubhouse afterwards.

Clarence’s Sunday mixed team and visitors Community, from Worcester, dodged the showers, and tried to make themselves heard over the motorbike din from the beach, during an enjoyable match which the visitors just edged.

Community included several formidable players who compete every year in the Weston Men’s Tournament. One of their skips was Adrian Burbridge, seven times winner of the men’s singles. But he and his rink met their match in Pam Fowler, John Atkins, Mike Scoins and skip Mick Edlin, who beat them 26-18, including a six on the 12th end.

Clarence finished up on two of the other five rinks, those skipped by club secretary Tony Mannion and vice-captain David Stott. Mannion’s team had a seven on the 13th end.

The bi-annual trip to Worcester normally ends in a defeat, but this year was different thanks to good wins on two rinks. A downpour towards the end of the game did not dampen Victoria spirits and everyone enjoyed a fine day out.

Three teams were involved in the Somerset County League and all three won with the A and B teams successful at home and the C team winning at Clevedon Prom.

ST ANDREWS, playing away to Banwell, lost their Turnbull Cup match by 46 shots, with the rink skipped by Andrew Owens having their only success winning by seven.

St Andrews played Frome Selwood at home in the Top Club competition. Andy McMillan got Saints off to a great start, winning the two-wood singles 21-5, before Barrie Forse narrowly lost the four-wood singles 18-22.

The Frome side had control of the fours match winning by 13 shots, with Malcolm Goddard and Steve Davies winning their pairs by nine shots. The result of the tie rested on the result of the triple skipped by Don Bailey.

Saints scored a three on the penultimate to go one shot in front, but in the failing light, the Frome trio took two shots on the final end to win the match and the tie by the narrowest of margins.

In the Allcock Trophy playing away to Clevedon, Saints had a reversal of fortune with match all square after 21 ends. An extra end was played, which went in St Andrews’ favour and an entry in to the next round.

St Andrews had a comprehensive win by 47 shots in mixed match against a touring side from Woodford-Cum-Membris.

WINSCOMBE started the week with an enjoyable friendly game away to Wrington, which ended in a draw over the four rinks with 71 shots each.

The home game against Clevedon Promenade in the Weston & District Over-60s League produced a good win for the home team by 44 shots. Winscombe lost in round four of the Turnbull Cup away to Victoria, despite a late rally and went down by 10 shots.

There were better results, however, in the Somerset League with all three teams winning. The A team won at home against Portishead RBL B by six shots, the B team at home to Mark Moor by 34 and the C team away to Yatton C by 29 shots.

ISLE of Wedmore hosted the Avon and Somerset Constabulary North versus South match, the first such fixture for some years, with the South coming out as winners.

The ladies were at home to Wyrral Park in a friendly three-rink triples match. The visitors won two of the three rinks, but the match was saved by Maureen Hordle’s rink recording an excellent 27-7 win, giving the home side victory by just five shots overall.

Bad weather caused disruption to the club programme leading to the cancellation of two matches. The ladies’ Wessex League match at Clevedon was called off and torrential rain in the evening led to a last-minute cancellation of the men’s home Mid Somerset League fixture.

The ladies were again in action when they were at home to Ashcombe in the Wessex League. Pauline Cottrell’s rink produced an excellent 30-11 result, leading to an overall win.

The club hosted the third and fourth rounds of the Somerset Bowls Association ladies’ and men’s two-wood competition. Wedmore’s Shirley Wederell won through in her third round match to go through, but lost in the next round by one shot in a 13-14 defeat.

Bad weather was again the problem when the ladies’ Weston and District League match against Clarence had to be cancelled.

An improvement in the weather on Saturday afternoon allowed both Somerset County League A and B team matches to go ahead as scheduled. The A team were away to Victoria B in Division 1, where Ron Barron’s rink were the only winners in a nine-shot defeat.

The B team travelled to Portishead for their Division2 match against Portishead C. Wedmore won on all three rinks with Colin Moss’s rink scoring an excellent 38-7 in an overall 38-shot victory.

IN a busy week, Banwell were successful in all their game, beating St Andrews in the Turnbull Cup, Clevedon Promenade in the North Somerset Cup and Portishead in the Four Dimensions.

There was also a victory in a friendly against a touring side from Pontyclun.

Although Banwell only won on two rinks, convincing wins by Darrell Johnston and his rink, plus Phil Villis and his rink saw Banwell through to the next round of North Somerset Knockout Cup.

Banwell sailed through to the fifth round of the Turnbull Cup with a fine 97-51 win over St Andrews. Banwell, won on three o the four rinks, with the highlights of the game were the picking up of two scores of seven by the rinks of Mike Davies and Darrell Johnston.

A fine three disciplines to one win took Banwell into the next round of the 4 Dimensions. Mal Laycock gets a special mention as he considered his marking skills were exemplary in the singles game, considering a stressful afternoon he had experienced with the president and a car parking machine.

Banwell defeated tourists Pontyclub 105-75, winning on four rinks and drawing the other, against a side that were certainly having fun. President Barry Taylor skipped the highest winning rink.

WINSCOMBE ladies played only two of their three league matches last week after bad weather prevented the game going ahead against Clevedon Prom.

Their match against Clevedon away in the NSTL resulted in a 51-50 victory, after losing one rink by 10 shots, drawing one rink and winning the third by 11 shots. Mavis Adams skipped the winning rink which gave the Winscombe team the vital extra shot.

The ladies were not so lucky in their game in the Wessex League played at home against Wessex. Despite one winning rink which finished 23-14, it was not quite good enough to cover the losses on the other two rinks and the final score was a 51-48 to the visitors.

WESSEX ladies enjoyed a successful week with two wins and one cancelled match because of rain.

ST ANDREWS ladies lost their first game in the DRT League playing away at Chew Stoke.

They lost the match by 20 shots, their only points coming from the rink skipped by Meg Favis.

In an away friendly against Wessex ladies, they also suffered defeat by 31 shots, losing on all three rinks.

CLARENCE Ladies were beaten narrowly away to Keynsham in the Bowls England Top Club competition.

The visitors took the pairs by eight shots and the fours by seven, but lost the triples and singles, which meant that the result had to be decided by overall shots. Keynsham winning by three.

Clarence suffered another narrow defeat, this time at home to Clevedon in the North Somerset Triples League. Carol Edlin’s trio won and there was a draw for Pam Hawkins, but Clarence lost by two shots.

VICTORIA ladies lost their Mendip League encounter against Fosseway, but picked up four precious points.

Despite winning two of the four dimensions, Victoria lost on shot difference in the Southey Cup at Clevedon, who gained revenge for their earlier defeat to Victoria in the National Top Club competition.
