Two impressive rink victories gave Clarence B a comfortable win in the Somerset County League at Yatton.

HANDSOME victories on the rinks skipped by Peter Palmer and Maurice Phillips helped Clarence B to an impressive away win over Yatton C in the Somerset County League.

Palmer’s team finished 21 shots clear, while Phillips had 18 shots to spare as Clarence notched up their second victory of the season in Division 3 North.

Clarence Blues maintained their 100 per cent winning record in all matches this season with a narrow home victory over Portishead in Division 1 of the Weston & District Over-60s League.

The match was close throughout, with Clarence just two shots ahead overall as the closing ends approached. But strong finishes from the rinks skipped by Roger Burrough and Brian Ballinger saw them home by eight shots.

Burrough and Ballinger both won, as did Dougie Grier, playing as a skip for the first time, in a depleted Blues’ side. Team captain David Stott’s rink drew.

Clarence Golds came up against a strong visiting Burnham team in Division 2 of the Over-60s League and went down heavily. Club captain Brendan Duffy’s rink earned the Golds’ only point, picking up five shots on the last two ends to draw.

The lively bowlers from Abertillery enjoyed themselves at Clarence and had a resounding victory in a mixed match. Clarence finished up on only two of the five rinks, those skipped by David Stott and Pam Hawkins.

ST ANDREWS B team remain unbeaten in the County League, beating Bristol B by six shots, winning two of the three rinks and taking 10 points from the match.

Then, playing Nailsea B at home, the Saints won on all three rinks by 18 shots taking maximum points from the encounter.

St Andrews A also had a win in the County League at home to Frome Park A with a good performance by the rink skipped by Grant Aldridge, they won a close match by four shots, taking points from two of the three rinks.

St Andrews A lost their County Double Four match by just two shots. A good win on the rink skipped by Steve Davies by 13 shots was not quite enough to offset the loss on the other rink.

In the Over-60s Triples League, a strong Victoria side beat the Saints by 29 shots. The only consolation was a win rink skipped by Saints’ captain Jim Warren.

The Saints, playing at home in the Over-60s Triples Knockout Cup, had a close match against Clevedon Prom in a game that could have gone either way. The Saints won on four of the six rinks, but lost the match by just four shots.

In a friendly match against Congresbury, the Saints came off second best losing by 17 shots.

THE bi-annual visit of Barnwood from Gloucester, turned out to be a good day for the visitors.

Victoria’s only success was the win by the rink of Mike Willetts, Terry Gatehouse, Mike Fletcher and Mike Taylor by one shot. However, this was always a competitive fixture and everyone had an enjoyable time despite the result.

THE Ashcombe Templars were triumphant against Mark Moor in the North Somerset League Division 3, winning four of the six rinks played.

On the rink skipped by B Noyes, ably supported by J Piper and K Davies, they romped away to take the rink 31-6.

Ashcombe Knights lost heavily against Portishead RBL in the Over-60s League and won on only one rink.

In the mixed friendly against City and Port of Bristol, Ashcombe managed to play 15 ends until the rain took over and play was abandoned.

Ashcombe B were up against Chew Stoke B in Division 3 of the county league and only won one of the three rinks played, as did the A team when they came up against Winscombe A.

This was followed with further success in the C & D league game away to Clevedon Promenade, winning all six rinks and by 123 shots to 67.

The Somerset League saw the A team win at home against Ashcombe A, winning two out of the three rinks and with a final score of 63-54.

The B team’s away game against St Andrews B was a disappointing result, with Winscombe losing by 18 shots and failing to win a rink. Winscombe C team also lost at Clevedon Prom, with the Prom picking up all 12 points.

WINSCOMBE ladies played two friendly matches last week, the first against Nailsea away and at home against Congresbury.

An overall 54-43 win at Nailsea was mainly due to the result on a successful rink skipped by Angela Ainsworth with a 27-7 win.

Fortunes were reversed in the home game against Congresbury, when the visitors left with a 61-52 win. Despite skips Angela Ainsworth and Eve Watts leading their rinks to victory, a deficit of 19 shots on rink three meant a loss for the home team.

IN the Weston & District Triples League, Victoria ladies won two and lost one during the week.

They started with a win against the Isle of Wedmore at home by the narrowest of margins. In an evening match at Congresbury, another close game resulted in a four-shot loss, although the game was stopped at 15 ends due to the weather. The ladies finished the week with a big win against Wessex at Clarence.
